Looking back for a common thread in my life - there is one constant - I like to move. However, I wasn’t naturally skilled at anything in particular. I tried out for volleyball in high school, I didn’t make it. I was on the badminton team, but sat mostly on the sides; I did gymnastics, I was flexible, but couldn’t do any back flips. I was a cheerleader and was light enough to be on top of the pyramids.
Fast forward to adulthood - if I couldn’t be an athlete, then I could at least help some athletes and weekend warriors. So I became a Physical Therapist (PT). I was intrigued by the human body and its potential to heal and improve. As a working professional, I continued to move - I dabbled in martial arts, did sprint triathlons, half marathons, and practiced Pilates. Eventually I became a Pilates instructor. So, movement has always been part of my life in one form or another. And what I’ve come to realize is that WE ARE ALL ATHLETES. We just need to embrace that part of us - that inner athlete who can move and improve. We don’t need to win gold medals, get on the podium, or even have a six pack for abs, we just need to move.
I believe in movement as meditation. Pilates is my movement meditation. It’s my chance to tune into my breath, to connect with my body and mind. To tune out whatever else is happening in my life, and to be present in my body. It’s a practice of gratitude for all that my body can do and it’s natural ability to heal itself. It’s intentional, purposeful movement. It’s a practice that embodies my values of growth, freedom, health and community.
Pilates helped me grow through the grief of losing my mom. It helped me find freedom of movement in my body, to focus on my body’s inherent flexibility, mobility and strength. I not only found physical strength, but emotional strength too. It was an access point for deeper understanding of what it means to be healthy. As I became healthier, so did my relationships with myself, my husband, my children, my family and friends, and my community.
In this post-pandemic era, I realize now, more than ever, the power of self-care and wellness and how that translates to stronger communities. I hope that as we continue to navigate the challenges of our lives, we also find ways that ground, protect and preserve our own wellness so that we can continue to be of service to the greater community.
